The K-5 STEM hands-on interactive Academy will center on concepts regarding Children’s Engineering/Elementary STEM. Participants will learn to use design, engineering and technology (DE&T) instructional resources to enhance children’s attainment of the Virginia Standards of Learning in science, mathematics, social studies/history and language arts. Participants will engage in hands-on, critical and creative thinking and problem solving experiences. They will discover how easy it is to integrate Children’s Engineering into their existing curriculum as a strategy for increasing children’s academic success.
The 2017 Content Teaching Academy sessions begin at 8:30 Monday, June 26 and conclude at noon on Friday, June 30. On Monday-Thursday, the daily schedule is set up much like a high school 4x4 block schedule, with two 1.5 hour sessions in the morning and two 1.5 hour sessions in the afternoon. Breaks with snacks and beverages are provided between sessions in both the mornings and afternoons. Participants who are enrolled in an Academy for graduate credit must attend two additional sessions scheduled from 6:30 to 8:00 pm on Monday and Wednesday evenings.
The primary check-in period is from 5 to 7 pm on Sunday, June 25. Late arrivals and commuters may check in early Monday morning between 7 and 8 a.m.
Linda Harpine is a Rockingham County elementary gifted resource teacher and adjunct instructor at James Madison University. She has worked with Children’s Engineering (Elementary STEM) teacher training programs for over twenty years and is a member of the Virginia Children’s Engineering Council.
Kelley Davis has been an elementary teacher in Page County Public Schools for the last 18 years and was currently offered the position of Division-Wide STEM Coach for all of Page's elementary schools. She has been involved with Children's Engineering for the past 4 years in her own classroom as well as teacher training across the state. Miss Davis is currently a member of the Virginia Children's Engineering Council.
